Updated November 22, 2025

This guide is part of Police Academy Guide’s nationwide resource for aspiring law enforcement officers – covering requirements, hiring, academy life, disqualifiers, and preparation.

Overview: Why Running Matters So Much in Police Academy

Running is the backbone of police academy physical training. Almost every academy uses running to build endurance, discipline, stress tolerance, and teamwork. Whether your goal is to pass the 1.5 mile run, improve sprint capability, or simply keep up during PT sessions, a structured running program is essential.

The Types of Runs You Will Do in Police Academy

Academy running typically includes:

  • Easy paced endurance runs
  • Timed 1.5 mile runs
  • Sprint intervals
  • Agility runs and direction changes
  • Hill work or stair runs
  • Formation runs with cadence

Common Academy Standards for the 1.5 Mile Run

Every state has different benchmarks, but typical passing times include:

  • 10 minutes 30 seconds to 14 minutes 30 seconds depending on age and gender

The faster your base time before academy, the easier PT becomes.

Six Week Running Program for Police Academy

Weeks 1 and 2: Establish a Base

  • Three runs per week
  • Two easy paced runs of 2 to 3 miles
  • One moderate paced run of 1.5 to 2 miles

Weeks 3 and 4: Increase Intensity

  • Three to four runs per week
  • One long run of 3 to 4 miles
  • One interval session such as 8 sets of 200 meters
  • One timed 1.5 mile run

Weeks 5 and 6: Simulate Academy PT

  • Four runs per week
  • One long endurance run of 4 miles or more
  • One interval day using 400 meter or hill repeats
  • One fast paced 1.5 mile run
  • One mixed circuit including calisthenics between short runs

How to Improve Your Mile Pace

Use these strategies:

  • Run negative splits (start slower and finish faster)
  • Use interval training to raise speed
  • Train uphill to build leg power
  • Focus on breathing rhythm during runs

Preventing Injuries While Training

  • Replace running shoes regularly
  • Warm up before every run
  • Cool down with stretching afterward
  • Increase distance slowly to avoid shin splints

Final Thoughts

A structured running program gives you a major advantage in police academy. If you can pass the 1.5 mile run comfortably before day one, you will handle the physical demands of academy PT with much more confidence and less stress.
